When the Oracle of Delphi told Alexander the Great that he was invincible, it was right. The son of the great King Philip II of Macedonia, Alexander was educated by Aristotle and commanded a wing of his father's army in the victory over the Thebans and Athenians at the Battle of Chaeronea―all when he was still just a teenager. By the time of his death at age 32, he had amassed an empire that stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River and included all of Persia and most of Egypt. He ruled as both the shah of Persia and as a pharaoh of Egypt by right of conquest, and he was also crowned king of Asia. Here, historian Bill Yenne illuminates the legendary vision of this classical hero. Exhibiting the best traits of a battlefield leader, Alexander was audacious, aggressive, fearless and victorious. His unfailing integration of strategic vision and tactical genius took him to the ends of the earth, and into immortality as a military leader. Alexander's influence on cultural and political history and the scope of his military prowess remains awe-inspiring to this day.

The memory of Alexander the Great is still alive and well in Modern Greece. There is a popular saying, O Megas Alexandros zei kai vasilevei, translated as “Alexander lives and rules,†which is still spoken in Greece to this day. Such is the modern memory of Alexander.Much is made in this book of how Alexander ruled, to date, the largest empire and was never defeated in battle. True enough. The lessons derived from his life and manner of leadership still is able to inform modern life. This book concentrates on the military prowess of Alexander the Great. It is derived primarily from accounts given in Plutarch and Xenophon and other ancient sources.Admitted the book does not deal with the political savvy possessed by Alexander the Great. In every land he conquered he encouraged his soldiers and officers to intermarry with the local population. The conquered lands thereby became centers of Greek culture and learning. He was not concerned with mere military conquest but a true investment into the future. Alexander did not limit his activities for short-term military goals but looked ahead to the future. In this respect this is a lesson that bears repeating. The book touches upon these political aspects but does not dwell on them, emphasizing the military side of Alexander. For those looking for the military genius of Alexander this book is more than adequate.O Megas Alexandros Zei kai vasilevei!
fantastic book. When I say it's an "easy" read , I mean it's a pleasant read. Just enough technical analysis to paint the picture but not so much that you start skimming down the page. Those of you that read a lot of ancient history know exactly what I mean.
I liked it very much. I thought it was well written and informative. However, like so many Kindle books, the proofreading leaves a lot to be desired. It would also have been helpful to have more maps and illustrations at the relevant part of the text.
Very informational about Alexander. However i would suggest it for a serious reader
I couldn't put this book down! Full of life-lessons, as well as a fascinating tale! An oldie but goodie, and Bill tells it so well. Highly recommend for both pleasure and historical value--You can trust this author!
A good survey of Alexander's achievements.
Book in good shape. Thank you.
Reads well, lots of conservatively presented history. I highly recommend it.
