About the Author
Dr. Ortmeier holds bachelors and masters degrees in Criminal Justice and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Public Safety Training and Development. He is a U.S. Army veteran, a former police officer, a former vice president of United Security Systems, Incorporated, and he served as the coordinator of a criminal justice program at a midwestern college for 10 years. Dr. Ortmeier developed and implemented numerous courses and degree programs in law enforcement, corrections, security management, and public safety.
Currently, Dr. Ortmeier is the coordinator of the Administration of Justice Program at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California. He also holds teaching positions at California State University-San Marcos, The Union Institute, and Webster University in San Diego.
Dr. Ortmeier is the author of Public Safety and Security Administration and Policing the Community: A Guide for Patrol Operations as well as several articles appearing in journals such as Police Chief, California Security, Police and Security News, and Security Management. His writing focuses on police field services, security operations, professional career education, management, leadership, and competency development for public safety personnel.
Dr. Ortmeier is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the California Association of Administration of Justice Educators, the American Society for Industrial Security, and the American Society for Law Enforcement Training. His current interests include the development of leadership skills and career education pathways for law enforcement and security professionals.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK
The protection of persons, physical assets, and information is a concern at every level of society. From the individual to the giant organization, the need for safety and security is a basic requirement. However, due to limited resources or lack of ability to confront numerous noncriminal risks, public law enforcement agencies are unable to provide adequate protection against the multitude of foreseeable threats. Technological advances create opportunities for invasions of privacy and nonphysical intrusion into organizational databases. Consequently, security services have experienced tremendous growth, both in terms of the number of personnel employed and the financial investment in loss prevention and asset protection.
